Mediocribus esse poetis
Non homines, non di, non concessere columnae.
[Not gods, nor men, nor even booksellers have put up with poets being second rate. ]
That was the Roman poet Horace (Quintas Horatius Flaccus) in his Ars Poetica.
That reminded me of the 80’s lazy afternoons when we used to be students. A lazy afternoon then meant a seemingly interminable stroll on the footpaths of Calcutta’s College Street, visiting the second-hand bookshops with hopes to discover hidden gems at a bargain. Yes, those old booksellers, who would not tolerate mediocrity in poets!
And dropping by the Coffee House for endless adda (chat) sessions over innumerable cups of coffee.
