About me...

I'm Subhamay Ray, a professional translator residing in Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta), India. I have been working as a full-time freelance translator since 2001. I have worked with some outstanding agencies throughout the world and I am a qualified member of internationally reputed translators' associations and language institutes. Living and working in Kolkata, perhaps still the most vibrant centre of Bengali culture, prepares me daily for my job as a Bengali translator. I draw my sustenance every day from a milieu where chaste Bengali is spoken, where still the best Bengali newspapers are published and Bengali books are written. This city still traces the footsteps of the most memorable Bengali writers and poets and the Bengali mind still finds the most congenial pasture in this city steeped in history. Kolkata provides a translator a fine vantage-ground for an adequate philological mastery of the language.

At the same time this city has the best traditions of its colonial heritage. It has been the centre of English learning in India and has seen the flowering of the Bengal Renaissance under the Western influence. Its institutions have traditionally seen teachers of English who could kindle in their students an unquenchable ardour for the flavour of a foreign tongue. The rapt felicities, the imaginative fervour that the best specimens of written English and especially its literature can evoke were not unknown in the milieu from which I come.

I can assure you that as a translator I'll hunt out with true scholarly relish the most obscure terminologies and I'll try to bring with unction the reminiscent flavour of the language of Tagore.

     M.A. in English from the University of Calcutta

     Superior Diploma (4-year-course) in French from the Alliance Française

     Urdu Certificate Course from the Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
